I was attempting to coax Alex down a slide. The playground was a labyrinth of tunnels and bridges, made of wood and tires and large chains. Children swarmed up ladders, jumped across gaps, bounced on bridges, and swung from apparatus to apparatus. By this point, Alex was no longer terrified by other children; they were merely a nuisance. Of course I wanted my parents to be impressed by Alex. He was three years old. I also wanted to show them that I was a good parent. They had heard some of my concerns about Alex, and I knew they thought Nanette and I were overly doting.

This went on for months. He wanted no part of the other children, slept most of the morning, and wasn’t even that receptive to being cuddled by his caregivers. ” Nanette went to talk to the teachers. They tried to be reassuring but the picture they painted of Alex’s day did not put Nanette at ease. Luckily, we thought, this was only a temporary situation. I tried to get a lot of work done, so I could justify picking him up early, but I knew the best thing I could do for him was to finish my dissertation as fast as possible.
